Marejada

Miami · Jan 2012

Marejada, the swell before the wave. Evelyn back in the water, all motion and light, the sort of swim set where the energy does the work and you just don’t get in its way.

This was the good water day, turquoise going green where it shallows out, a proper sky full of clouds, foam still sliding back down the sand. Black bikini, hair soaked and pushed back, Evelyn kneeling right in the wash where the next little wave breaks over her knees. Cold, probably. She did not let it show.

I got low for these so the sea filled the whole frame behind her, and then I mostly just timed the surf. Every few seconds the water would run up, she would settle into it, and the light would do that thing it does off wet skin. You can plan a swim shoot down to the minute and the ocean will still hand you the best frames whenever it feels like it. This day it felt generous.
